Now on to Shakespeare, MacBeth, and Sonnets! Before we begin to read MacBeth you will spend some time focusing on the history, format, themes of Shakespeare’s sonnets. You will work in groups today to determine the meaning of Shakespeare’s Sonnet #18. Then we will take some notes on sonnets, view some sonnets and then….write our own sonnets!
So, if William Shakespeare can write 154 of them, then of course you can compose one (sonnet that is!). You have learned the history of sonnets, the format of sonnets, how to paraphrase sonnets, and how to analyze what they mean. Now you will step it up to the next level and write a sonnet. Even though Mr. Shakespeare wrote the majority of his sonnets about love you do not have to stick to this typical theme, unless you want to, of course J You can write your sonnet about any topic, theme, or idea that interests you. The main goal of this assignment is that you write a sonnet that has 14 lines, has the (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG) rhyme scheme, has iambic pentameter, and is supported by a symbolic image that you will create in photoshop.
