10.05.09 – 10.07.09: Showing Understanding of Direct and Indirect Characterization in Shame

Hello, welcome to our class website! You will use this website everday, begining today, to keep yourself informed of all work that we are doing in class, to see important class updates, and to stay on top of all of your English class assignments. We are now into the 4th week of recieving weekly vocabulary words that you must complete a homework handout for and take a quiz at the end of the week to show your understanding of the words. If you are ever absent on a Monday, please take the two weekly required vocabulary handouts from the vocabulary board in the back of the room. You are never excused from the vocabulary homework and the vocabulary quiz on Fridays, unless you are physically absent on Friday or were absent the entire week, prior to Friday. You know what is expcected, so make it your priority to be prepared for all vocabulary work! Thank You.
This week we will wrap up our first unit of the year. In addition to reviewing point of view, perspective, theme, characterization, and active reading, we will also go over figurative language for our first unit. You will be tested on this material on Friday, October 9th. We will prepare for this by reviewing throughout the week and working in teams during a review game on Thursday, October 8th.

Vocabulary Homework Week #4: Week #4 Vocabulary Homework
English Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of direct vs. indirect characterization and dynamic vs. static characters by completing a characterization chart and answering questions about the short story, Shame by Richard Gregory.
Technology Objective: Students will be able to format tables in MS Word.
Getting Focused: Please use the first five minutes of class to determine the meaning of the words on the week #4 vocabulary handout that you recievd.
Agenda:
(1) Review Week #4 words – determine the meanings and update notebooks.
(2) Go over the week (Test Friday October 9th – Point of View, Perspective, Theme, Characterization, Figurative Language) *** You will recieve a story on Wednesday that you will need to actively read and bring to the test on Friday***
(3) Shame Characterization Chart Directions - Work on Characterization Chart – For the short story Shame.
4. Shame Extra Credit Letter Write a Letter from Richard Gregory’s POV and Perspective to either his teacher or to Helene. You will write this letter from Richard Gregory as the twenty-nine year old man that he is when he writes about his experiences of learning Shame by his experiences in school as a seven year old boy. Due Date: Friday October 9th 2:30 PM
Homework: Actively read the short story and answer the questions for this story. Due tomorrow.
